American Airlines 75,000 AAdvantage Citi

I’ve told you that I hit it great on this card. It appears as though it is still available. I saw this phone number on The Points Guy’s website. It appears as though people are having success applying over the phone with Citi. As it isn’t my link I say do it under your own precaution.

The phone number for the card is 800-408-4954. Tell them you want the 75,000 AAdvantage offer and they can help you when you call. That is what Mai told me who answered the phone when I called. You could always try to double up and get two different cards by applying about an hour apart and hope you don’t get the same phone operator. That could get you up to 150,000 AAdvantage miles.

Once again, it’s not my link, so I can’t verify anything or guarantee the promotion. For all I know it is a clever scheme to steal your identity… Good Luck. For a more Sure thing that will still help to build up your arsenal, go for something that is sure…

Will that hurt my credit?

We had one of our readers ask the question that many of you have asked yourselves as you’ve seen us write about using the credit cards to acquire boatloads of miles and points.  The question was…”Doesn’t applying for these cards hurt your credit?”  So Ken, this one is for you.

Your FICO credit score is composed of five different categories.  They are:

The pie graph above shows the weight that each of the categories has on your overall score.  For example it would be much worse to be late on a payment as it comprises 35% of your overall score than it would be to open a new line of credit which comprises 10% of your overall score.

The two categories in which applying for a new card could negatively affect you are in the new credit (inquiries) and the length of credit history.  Let’s dive into each of those categories.

Length of Credit History

If you are new to the world of credit you want to tiptoe around this subject.  That is why we have suggested that you get a staple card that you plan on keeping for a long time, then wait to apply for some of the cards with big bonuses once your credit has been established.  It can look very risky to a creditor if someone is opening a lot of lines of credit without first proving that they will actually be a faithful payer.

If you have had credit cards, a mortgage, car loans, and other forms of credit that have been established for a long time, then a few new accounts is not nearly going to seem as risky to the credit card companies.  These people would easily benefit from scoring a few good deals and lowering their credit score a few points.

Remember that as you have the cards for a longer period of time it helps you to increase the average credit history length.  Let’s just say that you’ve had your mortgage for 10 years, a car loan for  years, and a credit card for 10 years then your average length of credit history is 7.67 years.

This category comprises 15% of your overall score.  This is not a massive percent.  Like I mentioned above, it is much worse to miss a payment than to open a new account or two.

We also remind you to keep your cards open at least for the first year.  Most cards require an annual fee, but it is generally waived for the first year.  I would recommend that you keep the card at least until the annual fee is due, and then cancel, or the other option is to ask for a retention bonus.  If they give you enough points as a retention bonus, then it would be worth paying the annual fee and keeping the card an additional year to extend the average credit history.

New Credit

This category comprises a measly 10% of your overall score.  It has been estimated that a new credit inquiry takes 3-5 points off of your score.(This can vary depending on your score, but generally isn’t much)

Remember that the scores range from 300-850.  An 850 is the highest and the 300 is horrible.  If you have a 300 you will not be qualifying for any of these cards.  Look elsewhere.  You want your credit score to be ranging from 700+ to be getting approved for most of these cards.

Keep track of all inquires that are getting reported on your credit report.  Most credit card companies don’t make an inquiry with all three of the reporting agencies (Equifax, Transunion, and Experian).

For example, I applied for the American Airlines Citi Visa card in September.  They made an inquiry with Equifax to check my score. This means that Equifax is the only one of the three agencies that even dinged my credit.  Transunion and Experian didn’t even have any idea until the new card started showing up as a new line of credit in my name.

I don’t think that there is a set number for every person as the score has so many components, but for those with good credit it is estimated that you can have up to 9 inquires with each of the credit reporting agencies every two years.  Keep in mind that the inquires are only with each company.  That means that you could potentially have 27 different cards without facing the negative affects of too many inquiries.  I look at that and say, I’ll probably apply for about five cards a year.  If I keep that pace then I’ll never get anywhere near the maximum of 27 and I’ll be closer to 10 inquires every two years.

A wise man once said, “O be wise, what can I say more.”  Let’s be sure that we get you some free travel, but we want you to always be in control, and to use your credit wisely.  So, with all that information, let’s get started.

Bargains on Bargain Travel

One of the nicest benefits of flying for free is feeling frivolous enough to indulge a bit while traveling.  The beauty of such frivolty is compounded when you’re able to find ridiculously good deals while abroad.

I still shudder with joy when I think about the $35 suit I bought in a clearance sale I stumbled across in London.

Which of the following would you believe I’ve indulged in over the past few weeks?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

  1. Thirty minutes of paragliding over an amazing mountain setting, lush with greenery and a gorgeous waterfall for $44.
  2. A hand-tailored, made-in-Colombia men’s business suit for $119.
  3. A mock-Hublot rose gold watch for $16, (bargained down from $35).
  4. Restaurant meal platters to satisfy even the hungriest of wanderlusters for $3.50.

The answer, of course, is all of the above… I say with a wide grin.

These too can be yours.  We hope our posts are nourishing your wanderlust like kindling to a flame.  We’re urging you to participate in the wonderful world of bargain travel.  Please use our links when you apply for cards to obtain frequent flyer miles, or we’ll point you to other sites if there are better offers out there.

Travel and Currency Quiz

This is a picture from one of my trips.  It was awesome going to this place and it was pretty far away.  The two questions that we have for you are: Where was this photo taken, and what currency do they use there?

American Express Gold Card…No

So I’ve been hearing a lot about an American Express Gold Card that offers people 75,000 Membership Rewards Points with Amex.  I wasn’t sure if it really existed, or if I could somehow qualify to get the card.  I figured that it never hurts to ask, as I explained a few months ago on this blog.  I signed on to Amex and asked them as you can see below. My strategy is always to explain how I’ve been so faithful to them, and how I am a good customer, hoping that this will give them sway to select me.   It is the same as when you’ve been pulled over by a State Trooper and you use terms like “Sir,” that aren’t a normal part of your vocabulary.  (Who even uses sir anyway?)Here is a copy of my request and my response

(sheldonchristensen@gmail.com) 06/03/2011 01:37 PM I’m writing because I have been a faithful American Express cardholder for the last 5 years. I recently opened an American Express high interest savings account as well. I have heard that a lot of people have been offered an American Express Gold card with 75,000 membership rewards points as a sign on bonus. I have not received this offer and I can only find a 10,000 point bonus for signup. I was going to see if I could have that offer extended to me as well so that I could get the sign up bonus of 75,000 for the Gold Card. Is that a possibility? Thanks, Sheldon

Response (Michael Jacob) 06/04/2011 07:06 AM Dear Sheldon Christensen, I appreciate your interest in the bonus ID 5894 offer for 75,000 bonus points. I would like to inform you that this offer was sent to a limited number of non Cardmembers only by solicitation. Since your account was not solicited for this offer and you are an existing Cardmember, I’m afraid we are unable to honor this promotional offer to you. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to assisting you in the future. Sincerely, Michael Jacob Manager, Email Servicing Team American Express Interactive Services Customer

Bummer deal, I got shot down.  I guess it never hurts to ask and now I feel like I can apply for the Starwood Card without thinking that there was a better offer out there.  So, it looks like the Starwood Card is probably my next card so my hotels in Europe can be much more affordable.

Multi-Destination Travel

Many of you have probably seen the box, but maybe never understood what it was for or never even looked at the option. The “Multi-Destination” option on every companies’ website allows you to purchase an airline ticket that flies into one city and out of a different city. This is a backpackers’ dream. To be able to fly into London and out of Rome, into Oslo and out of Helsinki.

My wife and I took a trip in 2009 that used a multi destination tool. We wanted to go and see Southeast Asia. I had previously been to Thailand and the stories of the massages and the food intrigued my wife. She told me that she wanted to see the people, cultures, and food of a completely different world. As I searched for tickets I was looking for tickets into Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. When the lowest prices were on American Airlines and the prices matched coming in and out of both Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City I knew it was time to look at the Multi Destination option. I punched in flying into Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and flying out of Bangkok the price resulted the same. Great Success!

I was really excited because the idea of buying a flight in and out of Bangkok would have meant one additional flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, so the tool saved me one whole flight, transportation to the airport, bla bla bla.  Plus you get to see pictures like this one.

So, just so you can give it a try, we want you to go out there to your favorite airline, and pracitce using the multi destination tool. Kayak.com will do most of the work for you if you use their site. Dream of the trip that you thought you could never take. Remember that it’s not only the rich who can travel, it’s you. Get out there and see the world. You will never take back the dollars spent on a trip, even if the money had doubled since you spent the money. So start today, get the staple card if you don’t have much credit Blue Sky from American Express℠. If you a credit master then get one of our other cards to start building your arsenal.

Daily Wanderlust Ideas Via Email

I have two emails – one that I give to people, and one that I give to computers.  That way I’m not afraid to sign up for infinite numbers of websites, alerts and promotions.  Every day I’m invited to wanderlust by dozens of emails offering travel deals.  A good number of them aren’t anything special, but every once in a while, I get some tempting offers.

Just this week, I got this offer to earn up to 4,000 United miles by signing up for Netflix.  Kayak.com sent me my weekly alerts, the only interesting one of which was a deal for $381 to Mexico City out of SLC (sorry if you started to get visions of Tenochtitlan, the deal is already gone).

I also got an email from  Hotels.com Welcome Rewards, reminding me that I still have a free night stay because I’ve booked 10 rooms with them… a program I’m a huge fan of.

With these periodic reminders of how little I’ve traveled and how much there still is to do and see, I’m always aware of

In addition to offers from all of the frequent flier miles programs, here’s an abbreviated list of some of the other sites I get alerts, offers, and periodic emails from:
