Wanderlusting: Roatan, Honduras

As much as I enjoyed diving in St. Kitts, $120 for two dives was a little tough, even if the dive operator was a Boise State Bronco fan.

At the moment, I’m wanderlusting of Roatan, Honduras, daydreaming of $35 scuba diving, white sand beaches, and turquoise blue water… this and it’s still 90 degrees at home?  What will it be like when we have winter blizzards with sub-zero temps?

I have a good friend who’s going to be in Honduras for work, and, as any responsible wanderluster would do, he’s trying to tack a nice vacation on the end of his business trip.

I put some tickets on hold at American Airlines for 30,000 miles and $27 in fees, now the harder task of convincing my wife…

If all goes as planned, we’ll see the Mayan ruins of Copan, we’ll laze on the beach and I’ll catch up on reading The Fountainhead, and I’ll finally have the shark diving experience I’ve been begging for.

If any of you have been to Honduras and have any other ideas for me, I’d like to hear them.

What airline did you reserve with? I show that AA doesn’t fly to Roatan??

My itinerary has me going from SLC to SAP (San Pedro Sula). My buddy will be in Tegucigalpa. The idea is to meet up in Copan, and head to La Ceiba, where we can take a ferry to Roatan. Delta does fly into Roatan, but they’re not as cooperative as AA on frequent flier miles at the moment.

Hey! I just found your blog from Nicole’s post on Facebook. So cool! When are you planning on going to Honduras? We went there about 3 years ago and scuba certified on the island of Utila. It was an unforgettable experience. We should go to dinner and talk about it if you want. Let me know!

      Takara-

That’s funny… I think I saw you running this morning, too. I’m hoping I can pull the Honduras thing off for Oct 7-12, but I don’t think we can swing it as a couple, so I’d just be going to meet up with my buddy. Not fair, I know, huh?

Nicole and I got scuba certified in Belize a few years ago. That’s the only way to go. My buddy says that Roatan is both amazing and cheap for scuba.

We’d totally be down for dinner. Nicole was out of town for Ammon Days or we could have caught up with you guys there again this year.

Glad you enjoy the blog… we love doing it.

I know this is super late, but I just found the blog today. When I went to Roatan off a cruise ship we hired a taxi driver. We didn’t know it, but we basically “owned” him for the day. We thought it was weird that he’d drop us off at the first place and then hang out in the van until we were ready to go to the next place. Pretty cool.

We did ziplining that was awesome. Faster and longer than anything I’ve seen in the states. We also snorkled at a reef and ate some delicious local food from a small hut along the beach. We also went to Belize and Cozumel, but Roatan was the most fun since we didn’t have much time at Belize and I’d been to the tourist trap Cozumel before. Although, renting a scooter and driving around the island was a ton of fun.
