Wanderlusting: Roatan, Honduras

As much as I enjoyed diving in St. Kitts, $120 for two dives was a little tough, even if the dive operator was a Boise State Bronco fan.

At the moment, I’m wanderlusting of Roatan, Honduras, daydreaming of $35 scuba diving, white sand beaches, and turquoise blue water… this and it’s still 90 degrees at home?  What will it be like when we have winter blizzards with sub-zero temps?

I have a good friend who’s going to be in Honduras for work, and, as any responsible wanderluster would do, he’s trying to tack a nice vacation on the end of his business trip.

I put some tickets on hold at American Airlines for 30,000 miles and $27 in fees, now the harder task of convincing my wife…

If all goes as planned, we’ll see the Mayan ruins of Copan, we’ll laze on the beach and I’ll catch up on reading The Fountainhead, and I’ll finally have the shark diving experience I’ve been begging for.

If any of you have been to Honduras and have any other ideas for me, I’d like to hear them.

US Airways 40,000 Dividend Miles

With all of these cards with huge sign on bonuses, it makes me think, “What was I doing paying for my flights before this?”  I can’t believe how fast time goes, and how these offers just fly right by. It seems like I’ve been following these deals forever these days.

End of the Southwest deal

I got notice that the Southwest Airlines Chase card that offers 50,000 Rapid Rewards Points is going away soon (NOW GONE).  They will be pulling the offer on the 7th of August 2011.  Sometimes they extend these offers, but sometimes they don’t.  I’ve you’ve been hesitating on getting the card you only have a couple of days left before it will expire.

The Southwest deal is great because it offers you the 50,000 Rapid Rewards points, but you also have to take into account that they don’t charge for bags.  Each person is allowed 2 bags without any charge.  It does have an annual fee that is not waived.  So keep in mind that the value of the points is up to $800, but you have to net out the $100 annual fee.  That means that you get $700 in value on that card. Not too shabby.  This is especially great as there isn’t a big spending requirement.  It only requires your first purchase, and then they credit you the points.

US Airways Barclaycard

Here is another card that might interest you if you fly a lot on US Airways.  This is an offer that will give you 40,000 dividend miles (easily, you can get 60,000 after one whole year and a monster balance transfer).

This is a snapshot of the deal.  It looks like you get 40,000 miles for the first purchase, which is a pretty good deal.  It also gives you a 10,000 bonus if you use a balance transfer.  I don’t think that it would be worth it to transfer a balance as these are the terms:

Balance Transfer Bonus Miles: Cardmembers will earn one (1) mile per one dollar ($1) in balances transferred to your US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard requested in the first 30 days after account opening, up to a maximum of ten thousand (10,000) miles. The Balance Transfer is subject to the Balance Transfer Fee set forth in the Terms and Conditions

I’m not willing to rack up 10K on a credit card ever.  Nor am I going to pay the fees to transfer that balance either.  I guess that I see the 40,000 points, and that is pretty good.  It works really well as you don’t have an annual fee the first year either. Thanks to thepointsguy for this link.

Another good thing about this card is that it decreases the amount of miles that an award ticket requires.  For example:  An inside the USA ticket would cost you 25,000 miles normally.  Having this card will make it only cost 20,000 miles.  This means that you can take two trips inside the USA as long as you fly on their “cheap days.”

20,000 Mile Award Travel: The Primary Cardmember will receive a 5,000 mile discount off of each eligible Award Ticket. For example, if 25,000 Dividend Miles are required to redeem an award ticket, then as a US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard Cardmember who met the criteria set forth in the Terms and Conditions, the Cardmember’s Dividend miles account would only be deducted by 20,000 miles instead of 25,000 miles. For more information visit www.usairways.com.

Downsides:

  • Barclaycard will approve you for a card with lesser benefits if they deem you to be “unworthy” of the US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard.  I would be certain that you have good credit by using CreditSesame.com to get your free Experian score before applying for this card.
  • Offer is only available to first time cardholders

This would be a great deal to match up with the Starwood Preferred Guest. The best part is that you only need to make one purchase on this card and $4500 in purchases on the SPG Amex card and you have two people going wherever in the USA and staying pretty much wherever for free. Huh, and some people say that they can’t travel because it is expensive.

We also encourage you to use our links whenever possible as you apply for these cards and services. That is what keeps the information flowing from us to you. Thanks for wanderlusting with us.

Use Credit Card Rewards to Explore Europe

Do you daydream about medieval castles?

Does your heart ache to see the canals of Venice?

Will your life feel incomplete until you’ve pondered the Swiss Alps?

If so, you are a fellow Wanderluster, and if you’ll stick around for a few paragraphs, we’ll show you how you can make Europe your playground by signing up for two credit cards (and maybe a third if you’d like to bring someone else along).

The first credit card I ever signed up for offered a white Visa T-shirt as a bonus.  I wasn’t exactly thrilled, but I wasn’t disappointed, either.  My how I shortchanged myself.  In today’s day of customer-thirsty banking, credit card sign-up bonuses are as good as they’ve ever been.  In fact, I’m still marveling at the fact that this is even possible.

The Citi Platinum Select Visa card will give you 50k AA points after spending $3000 in the first three months.  If you book a trip to Europe with points between Oct 15 and May 15, and avoid flying on British Airways as a partner, you’ll pay only 40k points and a miniscule amount in taxes.

If you thought that was good, this one’s even better: The offer on the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express is great. Here comes the shocker – those points will get you eight nights at various European hotels to complete an epic journey through Northern Italy, Bavarian Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Prepare to be awestruck as you see how this plays out.

We’ll use Venice, Italy as our launching point because it’s sort of a popular place. Depending on where you’re at, plane tickets would normally run somewhere between $600 and $1200… yet you don’t have to buy them because you are a frequent flier mile pro, and you’re paying nothing more than the taxes on your flight thanks to the miles or points you’ve earned as credit card reward bonuses.

Now for the fun part… from Venice, your adventure begins:

You’ll very likely arrive at the Venice airport early in the day.  Be sure you’ve adjusted your biological clock because you’ll be off and running right from the start.  First you’ll pick up your rental car.  Having your own transportation will give you ultimate freedom and allow you to customize your trip to do exactly what you’d like.  I just did a search on Expedia.com and for the dates I chose we’re looking at about $345.

Day 1: Venice

We won’t attempt to capture the highlights of Venice in a single, measly paragraph.  But suffice it to say that you will not lack for entertainment in the floating city.

Tonight you’ll stay in Padova, Italy, outside the city an on your way to more adventure. Padova Sheraton 3-4,000 Starwood points

Day 2: Verona and Trient

Today’s journey will take you through a city made famous by its star-crossed lovers: Verona.  You may want to recreate a scene at Juliet’s Balcony, see the Roman Arena, or skip straight to Trient where you can visit the 13th century Buonconsiglio Castle.

Overnighting in Bolzano, Italy at the Four Points by Sheraton Bolzano. 3,000 Starwood points

Day 3: Innsbruck and Lenggries

Crossing through the alps, you’ll make a stop in Innsbruck, Austria, where you can opt for the Nordketten cable-car ride to the top of a mountain, or one of many scenic nature trails that will awe and inspire your.

From there, it’s off to Lenggries, Germany, where you’ll stay in the uniquely Bavarian Four Points by Sheraton Brauneck. 3,000 Starwood points

Day 4: Neuschwanstein Castle

Straight from a fairy-tale, Newschwanstein Castle just happens to be on your route today.  Marvel at what is easily the most idyllic of all the castles on earth.  I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve yet to take my wife there.

When you’ve had all you can handle, head to the Dornbirn, Austria Four Points by Sheraton Dornbirn. 3,000 Starwood points

Day 5: Zurich, Switzerland

A loop through Switzerland to Zurich will occupy your time.  You may want to see the Zurich Opera House, the Swiss National Museum, or indulge in more than your fair share of Swiss chocolate.

Maybe you’d like to stop in and see Rhine Falls -the largest in Europe before your return to the Four Points by Sheraton Dornbirn. 3,000 Starwood points

Day 6: By Milan to Genoa

Back into Italy, you’ll spend a little time driving today, but not so much that you won’t be able to enjoy a portside pesto pasta by candlelight.  The history buff can also see what is purported to be the home in which Christopher Colombus was born.

Genoa, Italy – Genova Sheraton 3,000 Starwood points

Day 7: Along the coast through Pisa

Say it isn’t so, there’s no way this epic journey could also include the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa? Oh yes, yes it can.  Can you envision a better way to enjoy an afternoon than scaling the 293 step spiral staircase of this white marble tower?

As if that weren’t enough, you’ll spend the night in the “cradle of the Renaissance,” Florence, Italy, at the Firenze Sheraton. 7,000 Starwood points

Day 8: Florence

Even the most amateur art afficionado can appreciate the works of the Italian masters, to include Michelangelo.  If you’re that or anything more, you’ll have more than you can handle with the museums, galleries, and public places.

When you’ve had your fill, you’ll head to Bologna, Italy where you stay at the Bologna Sheraton. 4,000 Starwood points

Day 9: Relax

Sleep in.  You’ve made some memories.  You’ve seen four countries, and a small corner of the wonders of Europe.  Wherever home is, it will never be enough again.  You’re hooked.  You’ve got the wanderlust.  When you tell the stories and show the pictures, you won’t be able to recapture the awe that you felt when you were there.  Start daydreaming of where you’ll go next.

Share the Miles Wealth

Tonight I was visiting with two of my friends at a party and they were commenting on this blog.  They were mentioning how they have taken advantage of the American Airlines 75,000 Citicard deal.  Bryan and his wife both scored the Citi card and they have almost both met the spending requirements.  They both are drooling at the potential places that they can go.  Their excitement has reignited my flame to share this information with other people.

He also mentioned that one of our other friends, XXXXX, also hit the same American Airlines deal that gave him 75,000 miles.  XXXXX and his wife took a vacation to New York to celebrate their 10th anniversary.  Before scoring the Citi deal he never thought he was going to be able to do anything very special for their anniversary as they were a little tight on income.  Using the card for his everyday spending made it possible for he and his wife to enjoy a trip that never would have otherwise been possible. It didn’t cost him anything out of his pocket to fly there, just a little bit of discipline to make sure that he paid it off each month.

Heath, another friend, totally scored the same deal by getting two of the cards for his wife and two for himself.  This means that he took home 300,000 AAdvantage miles for his family.  He has used these miles to take his wife and children to Costa Rica, and is already planning another trip in the future.  All of this for spending a few dollars on a credit card that he would have otherwise spent on a debit card without any benefits.

Starting this blog has really allowed me to share this information with a lot of friends.  We try to focus a lot on the importance of taking good care of your credit so we feel like we are really teaching people about the good deals, and their credit at the same time.

We take a rather conservative approach to the using credit cards approach.  I know many people who are applying for 10+ cards a year per person.  I’m sure that it might not drop my credit score by 100 points, but I still care about my credit.  I want to make sure that doing this doesn’t hurt me.

We would love to hear about your success stories.  Share with us if you’ve had the chance to get a good card and how it has benefited you and your family.

SPG Hotel Search Tool

This is perfect for the wanderluster.  Whether you’ve already applied for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express, or you’re still considering it, here’s a way to get started daydreaming.  Starwood has an excellent browsing tool that allows you to filter their hotels by your interests.

Because it’s my nature, I like to see what kind of bang I can get for my buck, so my first test run was to see which were my favorite category 1 hotels. (Hotels I can book with as little as 2,000 points on the weekends, – 3,000 on weekdays).

Easily my favorite is the Le Meridien – Dead Sea, Israel. You don’t expect this kind of lush paradise in the desert of Israel, and you certainly don’t expect it for 2,000 points a night.  One could launch an extraordinary adventure to some of the richest world heritage sites with this hotel as a home base.

Second on my list is the Chambersburg Four Points by Sheraton.  It’s a very nice hotel, but what I like most is the area that it’s in.  At 25 miles from Gettysburg, with Amish farms all around and Caledonia State park nearby, this would make for a great fall vacation.

Last, but not least is the new Aloft property in Zhengzhou, China.  It’s opening on August 5th, so as you can imagine, it is extremely new and clean.  Furthermore, it’s within reaching distance of Shaolin temple – one of the many sights in my long list of must-sees.

I can hardly believe that applying for a single card can get you 10-15 nights in these hotels, but it is blissfully, wanderlustfully true.
