{"id":687,"date":"2011-07-22T14:06:19","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T14:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/?p=687"},"modified":"2013-01-08T11:46:17","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T18:46:17","slug":"10-reasons-i-love-costa-rica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/?p=687","title":{"rendered":"10 Reasons I Love Costa Rica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve compiled a list of ten reasons why you should want to visit Costa Rica.\u00a0 Let me share them with you.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>If you&#8217;ve got AAdvantage miles it will only cost you 30,000 per person<\/strong> if you choose the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com\/i18n\/disclaimers\/free-ticket-award-chart.jsp\">Mile SAAver option<\/a>.\u00a0 This is totally reasonable to find flights on this option as long as you plan far enough in advance.\u00a0 I know that my most recent trip to Costa Rica only cost me 20,000 AAdvantage miles, but you can read more about that in a <a title=\"My Delayed Airline\u00a0Experience\" href=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/2011\/04\/28\/my-delayed-airline-experience\/\">post from the past<\/a>. This is great because it only costs you 5,000 more than taking a trip inside the US.\u00a0 Lets be honest; I have a world wanderlust, not so much as US wanderlust.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Food:\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>Gallo pinto <\/strong>for breakfast is an amazing option.\n<div id=\"attachment_688\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1992.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-688\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-688\" title=\"IMG_1992\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1992.jpg?w=150\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gallo Pinto with Scrambled Eggs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Somehow they cook rice and beans together mixed with the Costa Rican favorite Salsa Lizano.\u00a0 This blend of flavors is accompanied by fried eggs, or other side dishes as well.\u00a0 One plate of this stuff will have you coming back for more.\u00a0 Try having home made pizza with <strong>fresh cut pineapple<\/strong>.\u00a0 Going to Pizza Hut will never be the same when you order a Hawaiian pizza.\u00a0 My wife couldn&#8217;t resist eating the<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_689\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1957.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-689\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-689\" title=\"IMG_1957\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1957.jpg?w=150\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casado with Tilapia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>pizza.\u00a0 Everywhere we went she was trying to get me to order the pizza and share it with her.\u00a0 It was great.\u00a0 <strong>The Casado<\/strong> is the Costa Rican staple for breakfast and dinner.\u00a0 It is your choice of beef, chicken, pork, or fish accompanied with rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains (really good).\u00a0 You can get these in any restaurant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh Fruit:<\/strong> Everywhere you go in Costa Rica you can see people growing all types of fruits.\u00a0 My wife and I love fresh fruit, and Costa Rica is the destination that will satisfy your taste buds.\u00a0 On our most recent trip we bought strawberries, pineapple, mangoes, oranges, and bananas.\u00a0 The Mangoes were absolutely amazing.\u00a0 Luckily the man selling them on the side of the road instructed us on how to cut them.\u00a0 We had been buying them for a couple of years, but never knowing how to eat them.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll have to do a drawing sometime to show everyone the secret.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Low Costs:<\/strong>\u00a0 Costa Rica is a very affordable destination.\u00a0 Keep it mind that it isn&#8217;t the cheapest place that I&#8217;ve ever gone, but it isn&#8217;t too expensive either.\u00a0 I usually spend about $4-5 per plate at a meal.\u00a0 That is great especially considering that the food is prepared for you and is much healthier than McD&#8217;s.\u00a0 Our hotels were all very affordable as well.\u00a0 They have very large ranges, but you can usually get a hotel room that has air conditioning for under $60.\u00a0 Sometimes you might only pay $20.\u00a0 Just look around.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Beach:<\/strong>\u00a0 The whole Pacific coast is amazing.\u00a0 I know that lots of tourists use <a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_2013.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-691\" title=\"IMG_2013\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_2013.jpg?w=150\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a>these beach towns for prostitution and other bad things, but if you get out of the towns and see some of the more secluded beaches you can see some amazing places.\u00a0 Manuel Antonio is a national park and it is absolutely beautiful, but it isn&#8217;t the only beautiful beach in the country.\u00a0 Ask around and we would be more than happy to share some amazing spots with you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Volcanoes<\/strong>&#8211; Volcan Poas, Volcan Arenal, and many more are not too far from San Jose, and they are absolutely amazing.\u00a0 I believe that both of the volcanoes are active and you can actually see lava coming out of Arenal during most months out of the year.\u00a0 When you are lucky enough to have the clouds move from the top you might be able to see the smoke billowing out of the top.\u00a0 I know that my parents were staying at a hotel at the base of the hotel and when my mom awoke in the middle of the night they saw orange lava pouring down the side of the mountain.\u00a0 They snapped a sweet photo for a good memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Mountains:<\/strong>\u00a0 The country albeit small, is filled with volcanoes and <a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/picture-5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-694\" title=\"Picture 5\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/picture-5.png?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a>mountains.\u00a0 Driving and seeing the countryside is breathtaking.\u00a0 You drive from the high\u00a0 mountains, to the low valleys time and time again.\u00a0 They are working hard to upgrade their mediocre roads to some serious highways.\u00a0 There are advantages to both, so I recommend both.\u00a0 Driving from La Fortuna down to San Ramon had some amazing miradores (lookout points).\u00a0 It also takes you over some cool bridges and through some small towns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The People:<\/strong>\u00a0 One thing that I loved about Costa Rica, which was totally different than the Caribbean is the people.\u00a0 I feel like they are a very friendly people, who really want you to have a good time visiting their country.\u00a0 The people in the Caribbean seem to just want your money.\u00a0 I also felt like the Costa Ricans were really industrious.\u00a0 They were growing fruits and plants in the mountains and on the plains.\u00a0 They cultivate all types of fruits and vegetables, and totally take care of their land.\u00a0 Pura Vida is a very common saying down there, which translates to &#8220;Pure Life.&#8221;\u00a0 After any transaction or walking in the street people will say &#8220;Pura Vida.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waterfalls:<\/strong>Almost Paradise.\u00a0 There are many waterfalls all across the country.\u00a0 The two favorite ones that I&#8217;ve visited are the Nauyaca waterfall and the La\n<div id=\"attachment_692\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1962.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-692\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-692\" title=\"IMG_1962\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1962.jpg?w=223\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La Fortuna<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fortuna waterfall.\u00a0 Both of them allow you to swim in the water right below the waterfall, which is really recommended.\u00a0 The fresh water feels rather cool and refreshing after spending most of your day in the sun.\u00a0 They both also require\u00a0 quite a hike to arrive, so the water feels even better once you&#8217;ve achieved your destination.\u00a0 They charge you a couple of bucks to see each of them, but the Colones are well spent.\u00a0 I know that they have other waterfalls too, but these are the two that I&#8217;m most familiar with.\u00a0 I recommend both of them to anyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wildlife:<\/strong>\u00a0 This place is stocked with all types of wildlife.\u00a0 We visited the La Paz Waterfall Gardens and it felt like you were at a zoo, but at the animals&#8217; natural <a href=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1924.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-693\" title=\"IMG_1924\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/worldwanderlusting.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/img_1924.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a>habitat.\u00a0 Seeing a Jaguar in the jungle is different than seeing one at your local zoo. They have an aviary, butterfly garden, monkey, snakes, jaguars, frogs, hummingbirds, and tons of other animals too.\u00a0 They even let me feed a Tucan some fresh fruit from my own hand.\u00a0 Many people visit Costa Rica just to do birdwatching.\u00a0 I commend these people and I&#8217;m sure that they see some amazing birds, but I just pay a few bucks to see them in an aviary instead.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been to 24 countries and there are very few that I have visited more than once.\u00a0 Usually my thoughts tell me that I shouldn&#8217;t be going to the same place more than once until I&#8217;ve traveled a great percentage of the world.\u00a0 Sometimes I give in to my world wanderlust and I visit a country more than once.\u00a0 Costa Rica is one of the countries that I&#8217;ve visited twice, and I&#8217;d even consider traveling there again.<\/p>\n<p>Wanderlust in Costa Rica with us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve compiled a list of ten reasons why you should want to visit Costa Rica.\u00a0 Let me share them with you.
