We&#8217;ll then take the scenic route to Slovenia through Austria and arrive at Lake Bled in time to take a rowboat out to the island, enjoy dinner, and a stroll along the lake. \u00a0I became convinced that we needed to make the drive to see Lake Bled after seeing some autumn photos. This is the epicenter of the Renaissance and the greatest artists the world has ever produced. After watching all 4 PBS episodes on the Medici dynasty, seeing the Medici Palace, Brunelleschi&#8217;s dome, Michelangelo&#8217;s David, and the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci means so much more.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/18268458\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/18268458\">Sunset in Florence<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/gunthermachu\">Gunther Machu<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll take in the Uffizi museum and the Vasari corridor &#8211; something reading Dan Brown&#8217;s Inferno has inspired me to be sure to see, along with the Accademia, Palazzo Vecchio, and everything else our time will allow us to see.<\/p>\n<p>As it starts to darken, we&#8217;ll head up to Piazza da Vinci, above the city for a perfect view of the valley. Tonight we stay at another 3000 point Sheraton outside Florence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll spend the better part of the morning filling in what we missed the day before, and then make our way out of Florence, stopping by Lucca and any other Tuscan town along the way that seems interesting.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll make it to Riomaggiore, the first of the Cinque Terre, just in time to watch the sun set into the Mediterranean from our hilltop bed and breakfast &#8211; one we booked on www.booking.com.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4911\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4911\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4911\" src=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Cinque-Terre.jpg\" alt=\"collage of italy\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Cinque-Terre.jpg 640w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Cinque-Terre-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cinque Terre (Photo Courtesy Flickr.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Leaving the car at our hotel, we&#8217;ll walk from village to village all along the coast, enjoying the picturesque views. \u00a0If we can find the tunnel to Guvano beach, we&#8217;ll make our way through and watch the waves crash against the rocky shore.<\/p>\n<p>Once we&#8217;ve made it to Vernazza, we&#8217;ll take the train back to Riomaggiore and get back in the car. We&#8217;ll make a brief stop to see the leaning tower of Pisa, but continue on our way.<\/p>\n<p>By nightfall we&#8217;ll arrive at a unique lodging &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/it\/agriturismo-poggio-bonelli.en-gb.html?aid=304142;sid=ce465407d07fe087cad5ad849f223cba;dcid=2\">Agriturismo Poggio Bonelli<\/a>, a quaint Italian farmhouse on the outskirts of Siena. I booked this on booking.com for $100\/night &#8211; all of which will be reimbursed by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/track.linkoffers.net\/a.aspx?foid=21645018&amp;fot=9999&amp;foc=2&amp;foc2=586976\" target=\"_blank\">Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll set out to discover Siena. I&#8217;m not one for tours, but for 22 euros, it might be worth it to do a tour like this one:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.florence-tickets.com\/siena-pass.html\">http:\/\/www.florence-tickets.com\/siena-pass.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Again we&#8217;ll stay at the Agriturismo Poggio Bonelli.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found the most scenic route through Tuscany &#8211; a winding passage through Montalcino, Pienza, and Montepulciano. It was a little more spendy &#8211; $190 a night, but when I&#8217;m spending money only to have it fully reimbursed by the Barclaycard Arrival World Mastercard, I can allow myself to be a little more frivolous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4906 \" src=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/21557887_s.jpg\" alt=\"Etruscan Hill Town\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/21557887_s.jpg 450w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/21557887_s-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the major draws to this area was the opportunity to see and experience what many consider to be the most beautiful Etruscan hill city &#8211; Civita di Bagnoregio. This place is genuine postcard material &#8211; with steep embankments surrounding a walled plateau. We&#8217;ll park our car and trudge up the walkway to enter the &#8220;little city.&#8221; At this point I will probably have to swap memory cards on the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Again we stay at the Badia di Orvieto, feeling \u00a0supreme in our hilltop castle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On our way into Rome, we&#8217;ll stop by the ruins of the Roman bathhouse in Viterbo and head to Tivoli, where we can discover the famed garden of the Villa d&#8217;Este.<\/p>\n<p>Returning the car at the airport, we&#8217;ll take the train into the core of the city.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4914\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4914\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4914\" src=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/rome-collage-1-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Rome\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/rome-collage-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/rome-collage-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/rome-collage-1.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only some of the sites in Rome<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tonight and for the next 2 nights we&#8217;ll stay at the Sheraton Roma Convention Center &#8211; a category 3 SPG hotel that will burn 7000 points a night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even with three days, we&#8217;ll never be able to see all of Rome. \u00a0We&#8217;ll sure as hell try, though. Today we&#8217;ll focus on the old city &#8211; the Pantheon, the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Trevi Fountain, where we&#8217;ll of course throw in some coins to ensure our return.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 12<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4913\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4913\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4913\" src=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sistine-Chapel.jpg\" alt=\"Michelangelo\" width=\"634\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sistine-Chapel.jpg 634w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sistine-Chapel-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Vatican City is square in our cross-hairs. \u00a0I want to spend a lot of time under Michelangelo&#8217;s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 13<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before we board our plane to say goodbye, we&#8217;ll tour the Catacombs of San Callisto along the Appian way.<\/p>\n<p>After that, our adventures will cocoon into memories. \u00a0We&#8217;ll board the plane and tell Italy &#8220;Ciao&#8221; until next time.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>In the end, we will have spent no more than $1000 on food, gasoline, trinkets and other small expenses. Our major expenses have all been paid for by points aside from some minor taxes and surcharges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flights:<\/strong> 80k AA points and $162 in fees for two tickets from SLC to Venice and Rome back to SLC.
