{"id":4201,"date":"2013-04-08T07:02:33","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T13:02:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/?p=4201"},"modified":"2013-04-08T12:28:15","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T18:28:15","slug":"embera-indian-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/?p=4201","title":{"rendered":"Embera Indian Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every young boy remembers the time at elementary school when his friend showed up during library time and showed him a picture of some topless native Americans from the most recent National Geographic. \u00a0It brought a whole new meaning to a weekly trip to the library.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4203\" style=\"width: 2795px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4203\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4203\" alt=\"National Geographic\" src=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0627-e1365445616129.jpg\" width=\"2785\" height=\"2403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0627-e1365445616129.jpg 2785w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0627-e1365445616129-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0627-e1365445616129-1024x883.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2785px) 100vw, 2785px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My Family with the Embera Indian Tribe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even though those days are long past, I&#8217;ve always wanted to visit a native tribe like those pictured in the National Geographic magazines. \u00a0(Not because I could see some topless native American, I&#8217;ve matured since those days) The idea that tribes still live as hunters and gatherers in remote parts of the world like Papua New Guinea or the Amazonian rainforest has long intrigued me.<\/p>\n<p>Simply stumbling on a tribe like this was unlikely, and flying to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea isn&#8217;t a cheap endeavor. \u00a0For a long time I had accepted that we probably wouldn&#8217;t be seeing any native tribes like I had always wanted. \u00a0It felt depressing.<\/p>\n<h2>Embera Indian Tribe<\/h2>\n<p>Then, as we were researching our trip to Panama, we stumbled across the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emberavillagetours.com\/\">Embera Village Tours<\/a> company that offered guided tours of the Embera Puru village deep within the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Chagres National Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fundacionchagres.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage\">Chagres National Park<\/a>. \u00a0Our excitement grew as we discovered that the prices to visit the tribe were rather reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are other companies that can take you to visit the Embera Puru, this is going to be your best option. \u00a0Anne, who is the guide is married to a tribe member, which makes the experience so much more legit. \u00a0She understands the culture and can help explain anything in perfect English.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting to the Embera Puru Tribe<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll meet with Anne at your hotel in either Colon or Panama city and they&#8217;ll pick you up. The drive will take a bit, but you can enjoy the scenery. Finally you&#8217;ll arrive at a boat dock where two of the Embera Tribe members will be there to load you in the boat. \u00a0 Oh yeah, you heard that right. \u00a0It&#8217;s a tree that they&#8217;ve carved out and made a boat. \u00a0<strong>&#8220;This is my kind of National Geographic moment&#8221;<\/strong> was my first thought.<\/p>\n<p>The ride is smooth like an old Cadillac even though you&#8217;d assume it would be rough as you ride up the Chagres river toward the tribe. \u00a0It&#8217;s about a 45 min ride, so settle into your seat and enjoy the scenery. \u00a0Soon you&#8217;ll be greeted by the tribe members. \u00a0You&#8217;ll probably experience a warm welcome like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embera Puru native Indian tribe welcome\" width=\"640\" \u00a0They take items that you would see as useless, and create some of the most ornate baskets and carvings that you can imagine.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-4201 \u00a0Can you imagine making $1 per day for hard work?<\/p>\n<p>The men do the carving of seeds, and wood, while the women spend their time weaving baskets, bowls, masks, and so much more. \u00a0You&#8217;ll have a hard time not wanting to purchase one of everything, especially because you&#8217;ll know who made it for you. \u00a0Each of the families proudly displays their products, and happily explains the meaning behind each image.<\/p>\n<p>I know. \u00a0I know. \u00a0You&#8217;re worried about them begging to buy their products. \u00a0Don&#8217;t worry. \u00a0The people are very friendly and don&#8217;t hassle you to buy their products. \u00a0It will make you want to buy more and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Embera Indian Lunch<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4219\" style=\"width: 310px\" \u00a0They will fry you up some patacones, which are fried plantains and are rather typical food for a Panamanian. \u00a0They also cooked up some tilapia that was absolutely delicious. \u00a0They left all the bones in it, so make sure you don&#8217; try eating them.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing thinking about them fishing for their food everyday and working on little gardens to provide the food they need.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Embera Indian Home<\/h2>\n<p>You&#8217;ll learn on the trip that the Embera homes are built up on stilts. \u00a0This is done to stay away from animals, snakes, bugs, and gives them extra room for error in case the river were to flood.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldwanderlusting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/DSC_0477.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" interesting to learn that they can simply roll the log to the other side which takes away the steps and says to anyone that they aren&#8217;t welcome at the moment. \u00a0Sounds kinda like a No Soliciting sign&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h2>Anselmo the Medicine Man<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4212\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anselmo, the Village Medicine Man<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of the village tour includes a trip with the village medicine man, Anselmo into the jungle. \u00a0<strong>His knowledge of plants would shock any Pfizer agronomic engineer.<\/strong> \u00a0He was pulling all kinds of plants and explaining how they can be used for the benefit of humans. \u00a0He hands everyone a leaf and requests that everyone chew the leaf. \u00a0After about three or four chews my mouth begins to numb and I couldn&#8217;t feel my tongue anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe if he were to leave the tribe he would get a job at Pfizer, or Merck, but more than likely he&#8217;s happy where he&#8217;s at.<\/p>\n<h2>Why to Visit the Embera Indian Tribe<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4214\" style=\"width: 296px\" innovations these days. \u00a0It is tough to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the world. \u00a0These people can show you how their simple lives can be enticing.<\/p>\n<p>The time that you spend with the tribe will speed by. \u00a0Anne will be telling you that you&#8217;ve got 30 minutes and you&#8217;ll know that it won&#8217;t be enough. \u00a0<strong>We longed for more time with the tribe. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The smiles on the faces of the children will make you smile. \u00a0To see them so happy without the latest iPad, or the largest home is something to admire.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still happy in the life that I live, and my wife wouldn&#8217;t ever go topless.
